Flock Vs. Embroidery

Many screen printers seek to diversify their look and techniques to attract customers. Some printers venture into embroidery without realizing the great differences there are between the two techniques. If you seek presence in the embroidery business you have to go all in, like the large companies that produce thousands of caps of our favorite professional team. What makes sense for the big company may not make sense to a smaller shop where 70% of its custom orders are one color and one doesn’t have the time, space or trained people to do embroidery right. Here at HIX we believe Flock graphics are a great alternative to embroidery and other cumbersome appliqué techniques. Here are eight points to ponder. - Embroidery equipment is expensive, sophisticated and requires constant maintenance.
Flock Transfers use a Heat Transfer Machine, which most shops already have. They are easy to maintain
- Embroidery needs a cleaner environment and may require a separate production area.
Flock transfers application requires a small footprint for operator and a transfer machine.
- Embroidered designs take up to 10 times longer to produce than similar printed designs
Flock Transfer can be applied in 12-15 seconds, set up time is minimal.
- Humidity is a factor which effects how threads perform in the embroidery process.
Flock Transfers are stable; the hot peel adhesive sets up quick and holds the fiber in a permanent bond.
- Embroidery processes require new skill sets for workers and a longer learning curve.
Flock Training: Position the transfer, apply with a heat press, and peel hot.
- Embroidery processes involves digitizing, hooping/un-hooping, backing placement, needle threading, backing removal all time consuming tasks that slow production.
Flock designs require standard screen art, follow recommended dwell time, temperature and pressure on your HTM, press and peel that’s it!
- The quality and dimension of embroidery depends on the number of threads, anything above a certain number will require additional charges. Detailed type is hard to read.
Flock Transfers are dimensional, durable; produce cleaner lines and type, without additional cost.
