How to make Flock Transfers
How to make Flock Transfers January, 2008
Equipment and Supplies
  1. HIX Flock paper
  2. #60 mesh polyester screen mesh
  3. 60 durometer natural rubber squeegee
  4. A soft-bristled brush.
  5. Adhesive: Use clear when opacity is not required. Use white or colored for optimum opacity.
  6. Adhesive crystals.
  7. A HIX Vacuum Table such as HIX 1S/1C Table Top Printer.
  8. An air circulation dryer such as a HIX.
  9. Heat Transfer Machine: The HIX B-250 manual transfer machine for caps and the HT-400 manual transfer machine for t-shirts, etc.. There is also and air -automatic N-840 for tshirts, etc.

To Print Flock Transfers

  1. Use a water resistant emulsion when reparing the screen. Expose the screen with he image inverted as with any transfer.
  2. Set your printer with even “off-contact” etween the screen and the Flock paper. OTE: “Off-Contact” is described as the
screen in down position, resting about 1/16” bove the substrate.
  3. The Flock paper should be secured to he print base with a acuum or tack adhesive.
  4. Print the adhesive nto the Flock aper with one stroke sing light squeegee ressure, and a flood troke between prints. This flood ass is required to eep the image area rom drying and logging between rints.
NOTE: it is important to eep light pressure on the queegee to ensure the adhesive s not pushed too far nto the Flock. If the adhesive enetrates into the acking paper the image will ot detach following transfer it will give the transfer
    a stiff appearance.
  5. Remove Flock ransfer paper with et adhesive from the print station and prinkle the powdered rystal over the et transfer of simply our adhesive rystals in a shallow ontainer slightly arger than your rinted sheets. Pull our printed sheet through the pool of crystals.
  6. Remove excess crystals (shake or tap paper). Crystals which do not stick, may beused again.
  7. Dry adhesive in an air dryer at 170-190°F (77-88°C). The drying time will range from 10-20 minutes, depending on the amount of adhesive deposited and the size of the transfers, or rack/air dry for 24 hours. The dry transfers will still have a course texture and will not be glazed.
  8. Use a soft-bristled brush to clean off any excess crystals remaining on the Flock paper.
  9. To complete the fusing process, a final cure step at 300-330°F is required inorder to prevent discoloring. The white
Flock should be cured at 300-310°F for 2 minutes. All other colors can be cured at 320-330°F for 3 minutes.
  10. Transfers are now complete and may be transferred immediately or stored for future use.

Cleanup
Following production runs, the screen MUST be cleaned immediately to prevent the adhesive from drying the screen. Water based adhesive is easily removed with warm water.

Applying Flock Transfers

  1. Preheat the Heat Transfer Machine to 325-350°F.
  2. Adjust the machine for medium pressure. Approximately 20 lbs. (psi).
  3. Carefully position the transfer on the garment with the paper side up.
  4. Apply the transfer at 325-350°F for 12-15 seconds.
  5. Allow the transfer to cool slightly, then peel from the paper backing.
